OtherFarm OtherFarm visited Theo Jansen's [ 1 ][ 2 ] open house [3 May 2008] at his Windlab in The Hague [*1]. Theo Jansen is known for his kinetic sculptures, called Strandbeesten [Beach Beasts]. *1:???? A Strandbeest is a beach-walking sculpture made from commonly available tools like plastic tubing and plastic bottles [no electronics], and it converts the wind into compressed air as its energy source. By using [intelligent] cells, tube systems that control air flow like bits control a computer [off/on - 0/1 - the numbered sets of tubes on the photo below], the behaviour of the construction can be programmed. This sculpture knows when it reaches the sea or loose sand in the dunes and will turn around, counting its steps. during a storm it will automatically fold its wings [used for harvesting wind] and anchor itself into the ground using a hammer and a stake. More photos of the event. xpost - ofpblog specials |

Theo Jansen's work is completely amazing! This is a great video and you took a good collection of photos of the Strandbeest. I would love to see this in person.

Normally, there is an open day every month in The Hague, The Netherlands, but Theo Jansen also travels around worldwide to give lectures (Monday, May 12 2008, Chicago, IL).
Theo Jansen has an online calendar, but it appears incomplete at the moment. You can always contact him and ask. |
