Wakamaru can distinguish between up to 10 different faces, and can tailor its conversation to the preferences of each individual. Wakamaru has a constant connection to the Internet via a wireless LAN. It can read you?re new e-mail messages or the news to you and based on voice recognition and a built-in dictionary, it can be programmed to call or e-mail a designated person, a hospital, or security firm if it notices a problem. When connecting remotely to Wakamaru via its built-in camera-equipped mobile phone, users can see images of the house and even communicate with family members at home. Wakamaru is specifically designed to live with people in the home environment, so it has numerous sensors to help it maneuver around obstacles. Safety is also part of its design concept.
